Not too long ago, I spent a few months meeting up with a friend at the bouldering gym. We’d tackle the climbing walls and, during breaks, dive into real conversations about work, relationships, and dreams. We shared what was on our minds and what was inspiring us to keep going.
One of his long-time dreams? To own a motorcycle. It was something he’d thought about for years, yet never took the leap. Coincidentally, my nephew was working for Harley Davidson, so naturally, I connected the two. They started talking, and little by little, the dream began to feel closer, almost within reach.
My friend was getting nudges here and there, but eventually, it turned into full-on motorcycle shopping. He started taking lessons, diving into the world of bikes, and spending more time with my nephew. It seemed like he was finally ready to go for it.
Then one day, as we were catching our breath on the mats at the gym, I asked how it was all going. He paused, looked away, and with a sheepish grin said, “Ah, I dunno.” What followed was a series of reasons why he might not actually want the bike. He asked himself if this was the “right move,” clouded by a fog of doubt.
I couldn’t help but laugh! This was his dream, something he had worked toward for months. He was so close—yet suddenly, he was stepping back.
This moment reminded me of what I see so often in my coaching work. A client will begin with a clear, inspiring vision of the life they want to create. They’re energized, determined, and ready to make big changes. But a few weeks in, when the hard work starts showing up, they lose sight of that vision. The gremlins come out, whispering doubts and convincing them they might have been wrong all along.
It’s funny, really, because I’ve been there myself. Every big goal or dream I take on comes with its own set of resistance. Those voices in the back of my mind saying, “Are you sure you can do this?” It’s natural—it’s the mind’s way of protecting us from stepping into something unknown and uncomfortable.
Have you ever felt this way? Right on the edge of a big change, but you hold back just before the magic happens?
Let’s talk about that moment. What’s really stopping you? Whether it’s self-doubt, fear, or something else, I’m here to help you unpack it, face it, and move forward. Your dreams are worth it, and the vision you once saw so clearly is still within reach. Let’s make sure you don’t step back from the magic.
